The
government's affordable housing programme aims to construct 10,000 units in
Murang'a County in five years' time. The Makenji site, located in the Kandara
constituency, is currently under construction for the construction of 220
units. The project is expected to be finished by December this year.
Albert Muchiri, the central regional director
of affordable housing and markets, has stated that building of affordable
houses in the Kiharu, Kangema, and Maragua constituencies will begin next
month.
He stated that in each constituency, they
want to build more than 200 affordable housing units, and that the areas have
already set aside property for the projects.

âConstruction
of affordable houses in the Makenji area is going on smoothly and we hope by
December the project will be over and people will start occupying the houses.
The project sits on 2.5 acres of land which was donated by the county
government.
âIn
Kiharu, the project targeting to have 106 units in the first phase will be done
on 1.6 acres of land which belongs to the Ministry of Housing. In the Mitumbiri
area of Maragua constituency, 450 units will be constructed on a 4-acre piece
of land,â explained Muchiri.
The
director, addressing at the inauguration of the Murang'a County Affordable
Housing Committee on Tuesday, stated that 120 apartments will be built in the
Kangema constituency in the first phase on already selected 2 acres of
property.
âIn
each of the other constituencies we are planning to buy two acres of land and
start the first phase of the affordable houses.â he noted.
According
to Muchiri, residents may register to get their houses whenever they are built
via the boma yangu portal.
"Residents
can apply through the boma yangu site to be considered after the houses are
constructed. Makenji will have 100 two-bedroom homes, 60 three-bedroom units,
and an additional 60 one-bedroom units. The houses would cost between Sh. 1
million and Sh. 3 million, he said.

The
director emphasized the initiative, stating it has been a significant source of
employment for young people.
"For
example, at the Makenji building, more than 500 workers are employed every day.
There are also people that gain indirectly, such as building material suppliers
and those selling meals on-site, among others," he stated.
Murang'a
County Commissioner Patrick Mukuria, for his part, urged residents to support
this project, which also includes the creation of new marketplaces around the
county.

"The
government is also establishing modern marketplaces at Kangari, Muthithi, and

intended to improve the residents' livelihoods," the commissioner said.
Mukuria
urged citizens to apply for house ownership using the e-citizen online platform
utilizing boma yangu or the short code message *832 # in order to benefit from
inexpensive housing.
Ms
Laureen Wasungu, Murang'a's director of housing, urged local jua kali artisans
to participate in the building plan by providing components like as doors,
grills, and windows.
According
to Wasungu, the artisans must register with the Department of Small and Micro
Enterprises before bidding on the supplies.
