The
government's Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Developments
has provided clear instructions on how to buy affordable houses through the Boma
Yangu Programme.
Land
officials gave out the information because many people were upset that their
accounts did not show the money they had saved.
In
the announcement, the Ministry pointed out the main mistakes causing the
mentioned errors.
"We've
received many messages from you saying your savings don't show up on Boma
Yangu, and that's because you're not adding the word 'BOMA' before your
ID," clarified Boma Yangu.

People
who want to buy the houses must be Kenyan citizens, at least 18 years old, and
have a valid National Identification Card (ID).
To
start the process of owning a home, you need to make an account using the Boma Yangu portal or by dialing
*832# on your phone. To activate the account, save Ksh200 by using the
account number BOMA, followed by your ID number.
To
pay the Ksh200, you use "Paybill 222222, account number - BOMA12345,"
as shown in the example.
Once
your account is activated, you can save any amount whenever you want, as many
times as you like.

The
statement explains that the old paybill number, which was -00500, has been
replaced with the new government one, which is now 222222.
"To
follow the President's instruction of using one digital payment platform for
government services, we want to inform our Boma Yangu members and the public
that payments for the Affordable Housing Program will now be made through the
new paybill number 222222 instead of the old Safaricom pay bill number
005500," says a notice on their website.
After
signing up, members can check out the different projects in the program and
choose from a variety of options. These include one to three-bedroom units of
different sizes, depending on the location (county) and individual needs.
To
qualify for finished houses, several factors are considered, such as family
status, demand for different housing types, and the time it takes to reach the
required deposit amount, among other things.
"If
you don't get a house right away, you'll be added to a waiting list to make
sure you have priority in future allocations," says the Ministry.
Additionally,
members need to save a 10% deposit of the unit value through the portal, and
this deposit is refundable through the housing fund.
"The
law requires employers and employees to contribute a set amount, which is 3%,
and is limited to a maximum of Ksh2,500 per month. These contributions will be
sent to the Kenya Revenue Authority as per the regulations," states
information on the website.
